Some History
about Al Salazar and
DUFFY'S
IRISH PUB is owned by Al Salazar. Salazar's roots are
in the Hawaiian and Philippine Islands, but he has been a resident of Portland,
Oregon
since 1940. He attended both Couch and Chapman Grade Schools, and
later Lincoln High School, where he played the sousaphone in the
marching
band, and was active in baseball. He worked in his free time at Jack
Cody's Restaurant, and The Bohemian Restaurant.
After
graduating from high school, he attended both Multnomah Business College
and Western Business College.
While
still a student, he began his life long interest in collecting antiques,
with particular emphasis on light fixtures from all periods.
When
the Korean War came along, Al joined the United States Air Force and was
in the "crack" 403rd Troop Carrier Wing of Portland until the
war ended.
After
the service, he worked for a time with the Veteran's Department, West Coast
Picture Company, and was later a Building Engineer for the Fontaine Apartments,
as well as a number of other larger buildings in Portland.
He
then began life in business for himself by starting The Salazar Home
Improvement
Company. Later, when his home became too crowded to hold his
growing collection of antiques, he designed and built, (much of it
by
his own hand) the world famous Salazar's Restaurant in the foothills
of
Mt. Hood near Zig Zag, Oregon.
There
his collection of antique stained glass, chandeliers, and furniture remained
on display for 30 years, while he was the cook and the manager of his own
business for many years.
Not
content with being one of the regions most prominent restaurateurs,
he
purchased from the Centenary Wilbur Church the building which would
soon
become known as The Pine Street Theater. At one time, Portland's
largest
rock and roll club, featuring two or three national musical
acts
each weekend.
Many
local bands also got their start on stage, and their shot at the big time,
at the Pine Street Theater.
During
this time, Al became known as a benefactor for many organizations, sponsoring
benefits for the following inspiring individuals, charitable groups and
good causes; KBOO Community Radio, United Way, Sisters of the Road
Cafe, St. Frances Church, Baloney Joe's, Lloyd Stevenson, Billy
Rancher Memorial Fund, National Lawyers Guild, East Side Community,
Portland Zoo, Indigenous Woman's Society, Oregon Jazz Society, Inter-agency
Food Bank, Portland Go-Cart Association, Oregon Vietnamese Society,
John Lennon Canned Food Drive, Betty Roberts, Neil Goldshmidt, Home Aide,
Oregon Food Bank, The Confederated Tribes of Warmsprings, and many,
many more.
Al
sold the Pine Street Theater in 1990, and from there, moved his base of
operations to the historic St. Johns district of Portland, where
again, he was instrumental in organizing benefit concerts, and charitable
events as he built up his next business known as DUFFY'S IRISH PUB
in the old National Cash Register Building (the only building left standing
from the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition), a fabulous wooden domed structure
he had noticed, and fell in love with, while campaigning in St. Johns for
his unsuccessful bid for Mayor of Portland in 1988. He restored the building,
and under his guidance, it became the focal point of the St. John's community.
In
1996, Al sold DUFFY'S IRISH PUB in St. Johns, as he
wished to move to the countryside for reasons of his health. While
visiting the coast of Washington State, he remembered hunting and fishing
on K and M mountain with his father, who had been befriended by Chief Tommy
Thompson of the Celilo Tribe.
As
a boy, Al and his father were often taken on ceremonial hunting and
fishing
trips in Southwestern Washington with the tribe, catching fish in the Columbia
in water so clear, he recalls, that he could see the fish swimming towards
the hook from way far out. He was delighted to find the old Grays
River Tavern for sale, in this same area, which remains remarkably unspoiled.
He purchased the 100 year old building several years ago, and has spent
the last few years renovating it himself. Now it is scheduled
to open April 27, 2001 as the new incarnation of DUFFY'S IRISH PUB.
Sadly, Al's partner-to-be, Carl Simpson formerly of The Dublin Pub in Portland,
Oregon, passed away before they could realize their dream together.
Duffy's
Irish Pub features a truly unique decor and lighting, a sun porch overlooking
Grays River, a huge round stained glass window, a garden, and a few
of Salazar's favorite antiques. Several items on the menu will
be from the old family recipes featured at Salazar's Restaurant, as well
as the more traditional pub fare.
DUFFY'S
IRISH PUB will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from
Tuesday through Sunday, and will feature live music on the weekends,
open mike community night on Tuesdays (this will be a forum for discussing
local government, community policing, and other issues of concern),
karaoke on Wednesdays, and a musicians open mike on Thursdays. Duffy's
will also accommodate special events, such as reunions, parties, receptions
and cd releases. DUFFY'S IRISH PUB is located West
of Naselle, and East of Skamokawa, at mile post 17, on State Rt. 4, in
Washington. Come to DUFFY'S IRISH PUB, meet Al, and enjoy life along the river.
